About the project
Additional floorspace was required at the university’s Steve Biko Building, home of the Students’ Union, including its commercial operations, welfare hub and administrative offices.
This was achieved through two courtyard infill extensions at either side of the original building, while a major internal remodel, complete mechanical and electrical refurbishment of the original building was undertaken to address long term maintenance needs and protect its future.
The design builds on the quality of the commercial areas of the building, while enhancing and extending the facilities for the student facing areas which are the essence of the Students’ Union. Strong infrastructure within flexible open plan spaces allows for simplified orientation while providing identity at each level.
The exterior design incorporated a contemporary take on the existing building, using a limited palette of materials and bold forms that reflect the rhythm of the original structure. The introduction of a façade skin with deep windows provides articulation to the elevation.
