Snow Fox Ward

Supporting increased capacity and improved patient care at a leading London children’s hospital

We were appointed by Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Trust to deliver the architectural design and act as Principal Designer for the Snow Fox ward project, which saw the relocation of the Children’s Planned Care Unit (CPCU) from Evelina London to Block 8 at St Thomas’ Hospital. This strategic move allowed for the expansion of acute and high-dependency inpatient services within the main Evelina building by shifting certain ambulatory care functions to a newly converted first-floor unit.

About the project

The project involved transforming former office accommodation within the south wing of Block 8 into a new ambulatory care facility, comprising treatment rooms, beds, and chair bays. The aim was to enhance operational capacity across Evelina’s services by creating a well-equipped, child-focused unit that could function independently, while contributing to the broader reorganisation of paediatric care on the hospital campus.

The final design made full use of the building’s riverside location by placing the waiting area overlooking the Thames and the Houses of Parliament, providing a calming environment for children and families. A reception area near the entrance allows visitors to be greeted and directed, while colour-coded nurse bases act as navigational markers that also reflect the Evelina London brand colours.

We led the design team, working closely with users to determine the location and quantity of sanitary and drainage points, aligning them with existing external drainage routes and reducing reliance on internal floor penetrations.

A sleep clinic located next to the project area imposed strict noise constraints on the construction process. To mitigate this, specific construction measures were implemented to ensure noisy works were minimised and timed around the clinic’s operations.

The block’s narrow floor plan posed challenges in achieving the required clinical room sizes and circulation widths. We overcame this by developing a series of detailed layouts at Stage 3, integrating sections of corridor space into bed and chair bay areas while maintaining access and fire safety compliance in accordance with HBN standards.
