Newham University Hospital, Fluoroscopy Replacement

State of the art scanner replacement in a live hospital

Wilson Mason, together with the wider design team, were commissioned to refurbish the fluoroscopy room and upgrade the associated facilities at Newham University Hospital in East London. The existing room housed a fluoroscopy scanning machine, a radiation‑protective screen, an IPS unit, and multiple storage cabinets.

About the project

The brief included replacing the existing scanning machine with a new unit, installing a new vinyl floor, introducing a new suspended ceiling grid, and completing a full paint and decoration refresh. The adjacent I.T. room also required upgrading to support the fluoroscopy suite, including the provision of additional racks and a new suspended ceiling grid.

The existing fluoroscopy room required a significant upgrade due to the condition of the equipment and its heavy daily use. The new facility offers a fresher, more contemporary environment with much‑needed space for circulation and manoeuvring, enabling users to work more efficiently. The brief called for a room that was more spacious, brighter, and easier to use.

The scope of works included not only upgraded finishes—such as new flooring and wall treatments—but also substantial improvements to building services. Enhanced lighting was introduced to create a brighter clinical environment, and the ventilation system was upgraded with new supply and extract routes. This required two boxed‑out vertical ducts, finished in hygienic Trovex casing. The new ductwork also necessitated the formation of two high‑level bulkheads on either side of the room, leading externally across the façade and up to the roof. Planning permission was required for these external alterations and was granted with no conditions.

The site presented a challenge in positioning the new scanning machine while ensuring that all required equipment could be accommodated without clashes and remained fully functional. With support from the Siemens Healthcare specialist, the design team confirmed that the proposed layout was acceptable in terms of both floor area and height. It was essential that the scanner could move freely without any restrictions.

Upgrading the ventilation system also proved challenging, but it was carefully designed to avoid conflicts with the existing construction and to maintain the required ceiling height, despite the introduction of necessary bulkheads.

Noisy demolition works were undertaken during appropriate hours to minimise disruption to occupants on the floors above and in adjacent rooms. The project team worked to a tight programme to ensure the facility was completed in time for its required use in September 2025.
