About the project
The project was won as part of a limited competition entered on behalf of Roadchef. The competition involved the masterplanning of the site and the design of the amenity building and hotel within it.
We were then appointed by Midland Expressway Ltd to act as designer and construction consultant throughout the build process.
The amenity building features a three-dimensional curved sculpted roof and a tension rod suspension system to limit structural member sizes and roof depth to the amenity building’s main dining hall. This design delivered a highly daylit environment with a clear view across the landscaped site, setting a new standard to motorway service areas.
Known for being the only motorway services on the M6 Toll, Roadchef Norton Canes has capacity for 450 cars, 51 HGVs, 25 coaches and six caravans. It features a range of food retail options and conveniences, including best-in-class EV charging.
