About the project

Wilson Mason has been continuously involved in projects at the John Lewis Oxford Street flagship store since 1999. We have delivered projects ranging from the multimillion‑pound Beacon Refurbishment (reopening the original central atrium and installing new escalators) to smaller feature projects such as the 150th Anniversary roof garden, departmental moves/ fit-outs, restaurants/ third party hospitality, food hall, new canopy and full façade restorations. Our work has spanned both front‑ and back‑of‑house areas and required close engagement with a wide range of stakeholders across the Building Department and the store. This has included the Managing Director, department heads, external brand partners such as fragrance and fashion houses, and ‘soft‑landing’ style performance reviews with maintenance teams. 

As a key contributor to the store’s transformation over the past three decades, much of our work has focused on creating new departments—often trial concepts later rolled out across the wider estate. This has demanded close collaboration with Retail Designers, Visual Merchandising teams, concept designers, and services teams. In many cases, our role has also involved delivering enabling infrastructure to prepare the store for these major refurbishments. 

Individual department refurbishments typically range from £5–7 million and are often delivered across entire floors in carefully phased programmes, allowing the rest of the branch to continue trading. These refurbishments usually include new flooring, ceiling lighting, shopfit installations, and the introduction of new concept features and department‑specific elements.
