About the project

Appointed through a competitive design exercise to lead the architectural design for this new-build facility. Situated within a live, occupied campus, the project required careful consideration of access, safety, and disruption minimisation. With the express benefit of the centre being to improve students and staffs online infrastructure. This design provides the additional benefit of being not only scalable to an increasing year on year student body but also the changing needs of the universities data storage as well as ensuring the security of keeping that data safe is able to evolve as systems become more sophisticated.

A key technical challenge was addressing the significant heat gain from data centre equipment. The design delivered a highly sustainable solution using natural ventilation, high thermal mass, and a hybrid strategy of water cooling and ambient ventilation for areas with higher heat loads.

Security, accessibility, and integration with the wider campus infrastructure were fundamental. In addition to meeting rigorous technical and regulatory standards, the centre was designed to support future scalability and digital innovation.
