About the project
Haslingden has a strong history of street markets, holding what is considered to be possibly the oldest street market licence in England. Haslingden Market, like many similar sites across the country, had experienced declining popularity as shopping habits and demand evolved.
A public consultation by Rossendale Borough Council found there was still a strong desire for a regenerated market with a better variety of stalls, more food stalls, and more frequent opening times, including evening opening hours. These responses were incorporated into the brief and design for this project.
Our design team met with Rossendale Borough Council and project stakeholders to further develop the brief for the regeneration of the market, which lies in Haslingden Conservation Area. We successfully delivered a scheme that significantly improved trader facilities and created a welcoming and inviting environment for market visitors and shoppers.
The completed scheme enabled improvements to the gradients and accessibility of the landscaping, new signage to create unity and continuity across the various stalls, flexible area for events, and durable, low maintenance facilities.
