About the project

The use of a timber frame, along with cedar cladding and roofing, ensured this project could be delivered with low levels of embodied carbon.

By selecting stone and stainless-steel cladding materials, the building is durable and will require minimal maintenance. These materials also benefit users by supplying them with an ‘approachable’ interior, an environment that provides a break from the workplace.

With the priority surrounding this project being improving employee welfare the design elements chosen ensured that it minimised isolation and instead offered more opportunities for socialising. This is especially important with the restaurant component of the facility with serving a large number of meals a day a key characteristic was not to turn the restaurant into a canteen environment where comfort is impeded but still ensure that operations from day to day could remain efficient.

This sustainable building utilises its curvilinear form and shallow plan depth, to promote natural ventilation and enhance views across the landscape. The curves also diminish the apparent length of the building. The roof shape together with the use of high level north light glazing ensures the interior maximises daylight benefits while limiting solar gain.
